Home / Diamond & Ice

The rest of the American map

Diamond, ice, pitch.

Baseball’s long season. Hockey’s winter. Soccer on both sides of the gender line. Tennis, golf, and the three American Grands Prix as a nod — USA only, for now. This is the drawer where the country keeps everything that is not football or basketball, and we refuse to treat it as overflow.

Sample slate · not a live feed

MLB

One hundred and sixty-two is a sample size, not a vibe. We talk run expectancy, bullpen tax, and October as a different sport wearing the same uniform.

NHL

Goaltending is a market. Special teams are a market. “Hot goalie” is an essay until the shot quality agrees.

MLS & NWSL

American soccer is two leagues and a national-team shadow. The women’s pitch is not a charity beat. It is a professional league with a closing line.

Tennis, golf, F1-in-US

Majors on our soil. Cups that still use our flag. Austin, Miami, Las Vegas — a nod, not a second Formula desk. USA first.

Sample board

Four sports, one night, no hierarchy of cool.

Baseball

The diamond is a daily paper.

Starting pitching is a short story. The bullpen is the last chapter people skip and then blame. We will not skip it. City wordmarks only — no official club marks. Sample lines will read like a desk, not like a souvenir shop.

Platoon is not a trivia fact

It is a price. If the fourth outfielder only exists versus left-handed breaking balls, say that, hang that, move on.

Hockey

Ice is a market with five-on-four punctuation.

American hockey is not a Canadian import we apologize for. It is clubs in New York, Boston, Florida, Texas, California, and a dozen other cities that sell out because the sport is fast and the score is honest. We cover the NHL as a USA beat with an original rink mark, not a trademarked shield.

Expected goals are a draft

The close still judges. If your model loves a team that keeps losing to the close, the model works for the record, not the other way around.

Soccer in the United States

Two professional leagues. One standard.

MLS and NWSL are not “growing sports” copy. They are operating leagues with travel, tables, and playoffs. The USWNT and USMNT shadow every weekend whether we pretend they don’t. We print club wordmarks, sample scores, and the same True Price vocabulary we use on football Sundays.

Women’s soccer is not a diversity initiative. It is a product. Price it.

The American nod list

Tennis. Golf. Three Grands Prix.

We are a USA house. That means the Opens that carry the country’s name, the cups that still fly our flag, and the race weekends in Austin, Miami, and Las Vegas — covered as American events, not as a European touring desk. No official series logos. A sentence, a sample board, a reason-to-exist.
